My replicated site only promoted the company’s products and did not distinguish me from all the million other reps for that particular product line. Don’t get me wrong. Most replicated sites are beautiful, but if 1,000,000 other reps have one, why would they choose you as a rep over everyone else? That is why I recommend having a blog.
Most network marketing companies have website guidelines and do not permit you to put product names and images on an unauthorized site. However, having your own blog is not about promoting those products. It is about promoting how you can help someone specifically, and why they would want you as their personal distributor. You have to think of yourself as the real product. Your business is you and not your company. I have seen highly successful companies suddenly disappear leaving their reps with nothing an empty website address. It happens. Create your own business using the company as the supplier. Mike Dillard, a highly successful network marketer, calls it YOU.inc.
Here are some ways you can use a blog to promote your network marketing or direct sales business:
- Provide potential customers with valuable content on the benefits of your product. If you sell a super juice, for example, you are in the wellness business. Write about how to stay healthy. If you sell makeup you are in the image business. Write about how image affects job seeking or how to stay up to date with style.
- Do not openly promote your opportunity on your blog. It’s a huge turn off. You want people to read your posts without the fear that you will harass them. Make your blog inviting and informative. You can add a page that is titled: Work with Me. Insert a contact form for those who may be interested in talking to you. Once people begin to opt in to your mailing list, subtly suggest they look at your opportunity when you send an email newsletter.
- Create a hub for your team members to establish yourself as the leader. Put your team members on your email mailing list. Each time you write a blog post, make sure they get a blog broadcast of what you have posted. Create contests and incentives. Recognize team members for their accomplishments and include pictures of them. Shoot training videos or record audio podcasts. Encourage team members to interact via comments or a membership site. The point is that YOU are their leader and you want them to follow you. Take a look at an example of a team blog HERE.
Create your own leads via your blog.
When I was actively working my direct sales business, I made the mistake of signing up for an online lead generation company. It was essentially a site where you create a cookie cutter squeeze page and send people you know, or connect with, through social networking, to opt in on the promise that it will help them find team members for their own network marketing business. Once they opt in and become a member, the site encourages them to buy products that you are an affiliate for, to promote their personal squeeze page.
I admit, I learned some valuable computer skills from the training videos on the lead generation site, and also learned about how to make affiliate income. To be honest, I made some money that way. However, it did nothing to help me build the actual business I was promoting and I realized I was using it as an excuse not to get on the phone. Lead generation companies are businesses in themselves. You have to work them as actively as your other business.
You can do the very same thing on your own blog and not have to pay a monthly fee for the privilege of using a cookie cutter squeeze page.
On your blog you can collect your own highly targeted leads. Install an opt in box and, if you wish, create an auto responder series of messages through your email marketing account. I recommend aweber. Since you own your own blog, pick and choose affiliate products to offer that are relevant to your niche if you want additional passive income.
If you are in direct sales/network marketing, it makes sense to have a powerful blog with social network connectivity. A blog is not hard to set up. I suggest Word Press.org – self hosted blogs, especially for network marketers, because free blogs, such as blogger.com and wordpress.com have restrictions that can get your blog taken off the Internet. The reason for this is because other network marketers have abused the sites by openly promoting their opportunities.
Just a note: The advice to set up a blog applies for other types of businesses as well such as Real Estate, Insurance Sales, or any other sales related person who reps for a company other than their own.
