authenticity

As someone who writes about blogging, I am going to relate this to starting a business you love online.

The word “authenticity” has been bandied about in the last few years, and to tell the truth, sometimes has an airy fairy connotation to it.  It’s one of those new age, self development type words.  However, if you want to be truly happy, it’s important to define what being authentic means to you.

What is this word authentic and why should you care?

Authenticity is discovering who you truly are and what you really want in life.  That’s not always easy.  In fact, figuring out who you really are is one of the great mysteries of life. We are often influenced by what others want for us.  We become people pleasers and martyrs.  We get into bad relationships.  We don’t do the things we really want to do.  We maintain in life just to get through the day.

If you could have anything you wanted in life, what would that be?

Wow!  Good question! The idea of success usually means being super rich with a house in the Hamptons and driving a Mercedes.  Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with being rich. It sure beats being poor. However, that reality may make some people happy and others miserable.  Everyone has a different definition of what true happiness means to them.

What brings you peace and solace?  What gets you excited about life? What fulfills you as a human being? Don’t lie to yourself about it either. We only have one life as far as we know.  It would be nice to think we get to come back over and over again, but no one really knows that for sure.

Why not discover your true authentic self and build a business around it that will bring you income and make you happy as a clam?

Imagine doing what you love and not having to answer to anyone else!  There are probably a zillion ways to do this.  Doing it online is a fairly easy way. Sure it will take some time.  You may not want to quit your day job right away, but you have the opportunity to create your perfect lifestyle and be deliciously happy with very little overhead.

I don’t personally buy into the cries of victims who are complaining there are no jobs out there.  Who cares if there aren’t?  I don’t see myself working at Walmart.  Do you?  Having benefits is overrated.  When you are working at a job, the money to pay for your benefits comes out of your paycheck.  You don’t actually get them for free.  Why not pay for them by having your own online business doing exactly what makes YOU happy?

OK.  Not everyone makes a ton of money marketing on line.  In fact, many people will make NO MONEY. The same can be said of any type of business.  Take network marketing, for example.  Only about 20 percent of people in that field make any money at all doing it.  However, that’s because only 20 percent of network marketers put any effort into working their business.  The rest make excuses.

I know that to be true because I was in that field for 10 years and made it to the top 20 percent. It was a great learning experience, but I found I enjoyed marketing online even better.  There is usually a startup cost in network marketing and a monthly obligation. It’s certainly not as much as starting a business from scratch, but if you are cash strapped, that monthly fee plus other expenses can suck up your bank account. If you want to start an online business, you simply need to put up a website, which you can either do yourself for about $100, or get someone to do it for you for a reasonable cost.  After that, you can develop your business without spending another dime if you choose. Start with a plan and a vision.  How do you want to create your life?  What are you most interested in?  Is there a market in doing it?  How can you best make that happen and have fun at the same time?

What do you want your ideal lifestyle to look like?

I love the option of being able to travel whenever I want.  That’s my big thing.  I can work on a computer and travel anywhere as long as there is an Internet connection.  I don’t have to go to any meetings, bring guests, etc. I am working a service based business for now and growing my passive income streams.  I love it!

Being authentic extends to more than just your business.  It includes your entire lifestyle and interests.

Finding your true authentic self is about how you see your success, personal style, relationships, spiritual journey, environment, home life, and what gives you pleasure.

The newest social media rage is Pinterest.  I think it’s a great way to sort yourself out and see visually what you really want out of life.  It’s like an online vision board, except you get inspiration by looking at what others are pinning. This allows you to think bigger and expand your scope.  The jury is still out on how effective it is as a marketing tool, but it’s certainly enjoyable for it’s dream board capabilities.

Being authentic sometimes means reveling in your discontentment.

Obstacles and adversity are a pain, but often they propel you to do better, solve problems and improve your life. Embrace them.  You can’t avoid them. A bump in the road could be the best thing that ever happened to you.  Certainly no one wants to experience tragedy, but unfortunately, it’s a part of life.  Don’t let it squash your authenticity and squelch your ultimate happiness.

We don’t know what will happen in life so quit waiting until the circumstances are perfect.

There will never be the perfect time. If you are going to jump in and be authentic, the time is now. You can make all the excuses in the world such as “I’ll wait until the kids get older,” and then, one day, you are sitting in a nursing home.  Get started now so you can to make your dreams a reality.

How do you find your true self?

  • Meditate.  Or simply sit in nature for a few minutes a day.
  • Put down your thoughts on paper or in a visual way so you can see them in front of you.
  • Don’t over analyze.  That is one of the best ways to procrastinate.
  • Realize that you have something important to contribute to the world. Everyone has special gifts.  Discover what yours are and let the world know.
  • Be careful not to be influenced by what others want for you.  They may mean well, such as family members, but they are not YOU.
  • If you are in a bad relationship, and are not in the position to leave the bum, find your own happiness and don’t let anyone stop you.
  • If money is stressing you out, simplify and find the joy in the small wonders of life. . . for now.

Start creating your life.  Just do it.  Put your vision online and commit to making it work.  If you truly commit, you will eventually find yourself in the top 20 percent too.  Then your dreams will become a reality and you will be on your way to happiness and fulfillment.

  1. Rebecca, great article. It really speaks to how life and being yourself relate and interact if you just be honest and yourself. People will see that and will be attracted to those who want to be treated as they would treat themselves.
I particularly like the section you speak about on how to find your true self.
    all the best,
